Directions Around the City


Tuscaloosa is a great city, but it is not the easiest town to learn. The streets are not perfect blocks labeled with numbers. I have found that the best way for a town to be designed is in square blocks. I spent most of my life in Charleston, West Virginia, where shops downtown are easy to find because all the streets are square blocks. The streets in Charleston are not labeled with numbers, but after a few times of driving around, you get the hang of it. There are some parts of Tuscaloosa that are conveniently labeled and easy to find, but when you get into the newer areas, it is clear that there was not as much planning put into the layout. I admit that after a month or so, you can find you way to just about anywhere you want to go. But for new students, time is precious. You do not want to spend an hour looking for a grocery store when you could be studying, so I put together directions to some of the local stores. Every place that you need to go is probably not on this list. If you cannot find what you are looking for here, I suggest you check the on-line yellow pages. There is usually a miniature map provided to give you an idea of the location of the store. If for some reason you still can not find directions, try the shop’s home web site or ask a friend.

There are three Blockbusters in the Tuscaloosa area.

The closest Blockbuster to the University is located on McFarland Blvd between 15th St and Hardgrove Rd. It is located in a shopping plaza beside Kinko's and Rite Aid.

Books-A-Million
Books-A-Million is located in the parking lot of the McFarland Mall. It is on the corner of McFarland Blvd. and Skyland Blvd. There is also a Bookland located inside the University Mall.

Kinko's
Kinko's is located in the same shopping plaza as the Blockbuster listed above. The plaza is located on McFarland Blvd. between 15th St. and Hardgrove Rd.

Movie Theaters
There are two theaters in Tuscaloosa. The closest one to the Universtiy is the Bama Six Cinema, but Fox 12 Cinemas is larger.

BAMA Six Cinema:
This theater is located at the Bama Mall. The Mall is located on the corner of Hardgrove Rd. and McFarland Blvd. It is located across the street from the shopping plaza where Kinko's and Blockbuster are located.

Wal*Mart
The Wal*Mart closest to the University is located across from the McFarland Mall on Skyland Blvd. There is also a Lowe's and an Office Depot in the same shopping area as Wal*Mart.
