Tuscaloosa offers several opportunites to get in touch with your wild side. Students at the University like to break away from the city and hit the trails for some hiking, biking and camping.

Oak Mountain is Alabama's largest state park. The park is made up of over ten thousand acres of mountains, hiking trails, biking trails, lakes for fishing, and golf corses. Oak Mountain has a wonderful nature trail where you can walk along a board walk that is built in the tree tops. As you walk along the board walk you will most likely see some of Alabama's wildlife, such as creature-barred owls, black vultures, red-tailed hawks,and red-shouldered hawks.

Oak Mountain also welcomes overnight backpckers who are accomidated with designated backcounrty campsites for camping only. The fees for camping are $3.00 per person per night and all backpackers must register at the country store at least one hour before sunset. The state park has a long list of rules that must be follow to help preserve the fragile ecosystem of Oak Mountain.

Little River Canyon National Preserve is located at Fort Payne, Alabama. Little Canyon is most popular for kayaking due to the "Little River", which extends the length of Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama. Little Canyon offers picnicking, hiking, wading, class III through VI white water paddling, conoeing, mountain bike riding, horse back riding and rock climbing.

You don't even have to leave the town of Tuscaloosa to experience all these outdoor activities. If you are into mountain biking then Munny Sokol Park is the place for you. The park is found on the outskirts of town and offers a verity singletrack trail through the woods. If you like riding the rolling hills then you will really enjoy these trails. The trails are set for people to have fun on and can be completed in 45 minutes to an hour. Another fun place located in Tuscaloosa is called the "cliffs". This is a place were students like to kick back and relax.

Horse Pens 40 is located near Steele, Alabama and is considered to be an area that is rich in history dating back to the native Americans that lived in Alabama. Horse Pen is a large natural rock formation that has one of the best views Alabama can offer.
