Trolley Routes Metro Transit Routes Cab Services Other Services In the city of Tuscaloosa the main way to get around town is by car. However, the city offers other alternatives for those who do not want to or cannot drive, including a bus service and taxi services. The newest addition to the Tuscaloosa public transportation system is the Tuscaloosa Trolley. This system was established in 1999 as a joint venture between the City of Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama, and the Tuscaloosa Transit Authority. These buses are decorated in the style of vintage trolley cars in honor of Tuscaloosa's original streetcar line, which ran from 1882 to 1940. The Trolley provides a cheap and fast way to get around the campus and downtown. It is an especially useful means of transportation on game days. The trolley runs both daytime and evening routes. The daytime route runs from 9:30a.m. -3:30p.m. Monday through Friday. The evening route runs 6:30p.m. - 12:30a.m. Monday through Wednesday and 6:30p.m. - 2:30a.m. Thursday through Saturday. These late hours on the weekends are great for students who may have a little too much to drink downtown or on the strip, and students get to ride free with I.D. For those times when you need to go beyond the campus and the downtown area, the city bus system provides a broad coverage area. The bus runs four different routes from 5:00a.m. - 6:00p.m. daily. Even though this service is cheaper than taking a cab, it is rarely taken advantage of by the people in Tuscaloosa, especially the students. Since it can be difficult to walk or bike safely from the campus to Skyland Boulavard or many other parts of Tuscaloosa, the city bus system provides a safe alternative. Unlike the trolley, the city bus does not have an evening route. Also, students do not ride free. Four cab companies, Greyhound and Amtrak also service Tuscaloosa. Reservations and schedules for both Amtrak and Greyhound are available on their websites. Page Designer: Angela Brink |
